Scope and Content Note 

Collection spans 1858-1930 and is contained in 24 folders. It is in three boxes. The bulk of the collection is made up of Irving C. and Austin G. Bartlett’s personal and business papers. Topics of interest are a Russellville, Ky. quarry, the Louisville and Nashville Railroad, distillery and tobacco industries, Freemasons, baseball, Indian rights, Daniel Boone, and anti-Catholic feelings. It also includes tobacco tags, ca. 1880s, and a Confederate Association of Kentucky Constitution and By-laws pamphlet. 

Biographical Note 

Irving Chapin Bartlett, son of Phipps Waldo Bartlett and Emily Byrd (Chapin) Bartlett, was born in Clarksburg, Va., (now W. Va.) on 19 December 1842. He married Ella Glazebrook; and the couple had one son, Austin Glazebrook Bartlett. Bartlett died on 10 July 1893. 

Bartlett received his early education in Flemingsburg, Ky., and graduated from high school in Convington, Ky. After graduating from Centre College in Danville, Ky., in 1861, he enlisted in the military of the Confederate States of America and served under the command of General John Hunt Morgan. After being wounded at Edgefield, Tenn., Bartlett was discharged and moved to Louisville, Ky. In 1865 he began working at the Second National Bank. Later on, Bartlett became a partner in John Callaghan and Company, a whiskey wholesaler. 

Austin Glazebrook Bartlett, son of Irving Chapin Bartlett and Ella (Glazebrook) Bartlett, was born in Louisville, Ky., and graduated from the University of Virginia. From 1909-1919 he served as Vice-President and Treasurer of the W. J. Sparks Company of Mt. Vernon, Ky., and from 1921-1925 he operated a stone quarry in Russellville, Ky. He was married to Bess (Sparks) Bartlett.

Scope and Content Note 

Correspondence, diary, legal papers, ephemera, etc. pertaining to Banks, a Louisville Presbyterian minister. The diary and some of the letters chronicle his 1815-1816 trip from Connecticut to Louisville in which he travels through New York, Pennsylvania, and Ohio; his 1821 trip to Indiana; and his 1822 trip to New Orleans. He describes his travel experiences including his activities, the land, and the people. He also pays particular attention to religious matters. Other letters describe his activities in Louisville, including religious matters, and residents. Collection also includes sermon notes, poems, a circular letter about the effort to establish The Kentucky Historical Society, and miscellaneous material. 

Biographical Note 

Daniel Chapman Banks (1782-1844) was a Presbyterian clergyman who traveled as a missionary from Connecticut, through New York, Pennsylvania, and Ohio, to Louisville, Ky. in search of a ministerial position. In Louisville, Banks was asked to form the First Presbyterian Church in the city. He was released from the church ca. 1822 and traveled as a missionary and sold Bibles. One of Louisville’s prominent citizens he helped to organize other Presbyterian churches, and other civic affairs. Banks was buried in Western Cemetery.

Scope and Content Note 

Diary of Lt. Col. Chesley D. Bailey of the 9th Kentucky Infantry during the Civil War. The diary starts in Nov. 1863 but Bailey begins to keep it faithfully in Feb. 1864 with few gaps before he is wounded during the battle for Atlanta. In the back he has noted various expenditures, where and when he is stationed, and items such as cartridges issued. Bailey describes the skirmishes and battles of the 9th Kentucky in Tennessee and Georgia. 

Biographical Note 

Chesley D. Bailey enlisted in the 9th Kentucky Infantry on 19 March 1862 as a Captain. He was promoted to Lt. Colonel on 18 May 1863. He was married to Elizabeth Berry. He commanded the 9th Kentucky from 3 May to 26 June while Col. Cram was ill. He was wounded in the femoral artery at Jonesboro outside of Atlanta was discharged in October 1864 due to his injury.

Scope and Content Note 

Papers include Richard Clough Anderson correspondence, 1785-1826, accounts, 1777-1821, miscellaneous land papers, 1771-1823, and family correspondence of the Andersons and Lathams. Family correspondence includes letters from Anderson’s children, Charles, John, Roy, Larz, Maria Williams, Sarah, Mary Louis, Robert, and William Marshall Anderson, and from his son-in-law, James Hall discussing their activities and news. Letters from Louisville and Jefferson County record social events of the day. Other correspondents include Daniel Gregg, R.G. Lewis, and John Cleves Symmes.

Scope and Content Note 

Collection includes correspondence, translations, manuscripts, etc. of Young E. Allison, III; and correspondence of his wife Margaret Tarrant Allison, their children, Young E. Allison, IV, and Margaret Allison Nightingale, and other Allison family members. Correspondence includes information on the 1937 flood, Eastern Kentucky, racial attitudes, World War II, and atomic weapons. The World War II letters are particularly interesting for their descriptions of WAVE and Army Air Force training during the war, and the contrast of social and housing conditions between commissioned and non-commissioned officers.

Scope and Content Note 

Collection includes the papers of Hew Ainslie and his son, James Wellstood Ainslie. Collection begins twelve years after Hew Ainslie’s 1822 move to the United States and ends in 1900. Correspondence is mainly personal but also discusses Ainslie’s business interests and his poetry. Correspondence of his son is also predominantly personal with the exception of some printed material concerning the trials of the Goebel assassination defendants. 

Correspondents include James Grant Wilson, Archibald Wilson, Thomas C. Latto, Sara D. Vandervoort, Benson J. Lossing, Daniel Ricketson, Archibald G. Constable, and George Donaldson.

Scope and Content Note 

Papers include correspondence regarding business and family matters, the Jennie Casseday Rest Cottage, and the Louisville Free Kindergarten Association; and a map of Lakeland, Fla., 1884. 

Also included are the papers of William Garnett Munn (1855-1948), Louisville manufacturer and son of Abraham Munn, containing routine correspondence and an 1889 stock certificate for the Pewee Valley Hotel Co. 

Collection also includes Louisville Fire Dept. reports for 1909. 

Correspondents include Bishop Thomas U. Dudley, Andrew Cowan, Augustus E. Willson, and others 

Biographical Note 

1819 Born in Orange, N. J. 

1838 Moved to Louisville. 

1844 Started his own seed and agricultural store. 

1844 Married Rebecca Morton. 

1855-1866 Ran Munn & Co. which produced agricultural implements. 

1866 Moved back to N. J. 

1882 Became president of Brennan & Co. 

1909 Died

Scope and Content Note 

The papers of James Abert cover his travels to Europe, military service during the Civil War, and his years as a professor. The collection consists of twelve volumes, most of which are sketchbooks. These include sketches and watercolor drawings. Most of the illustrations are of classical, floral, and American Indian (especially Aztec) themes. Some are of buildings and statues seen on his 1861 trip to Paris and Rome. There is also a sketchbook which includes several articles written by Abert on art and the Aztecs. Also included are Abert’s military journal of his service as a topographical engineer in the Dept. of the Shenandoah, a notebook containing engineering memoranda with notes on the battle of Fredericksburg and maps, and a pamphlet entitled Personal Recollections of the War. The papers of James William Abert, Army officer and university professor, were purchased in 1943.
