Scope and Content Note 

Diary of Lt. Col. Chesley D. Bailey of the 9th Kentucky Infantry during the Civil War. The diary starts in Nov. 1863 but Bailey begins to keep it faithfully in Feb. 1864 with few gaps before he is wounded during the battle for Atlanta. In the back he has noted various expenditures, where and when he is stationed, and items such as cartridges issued. Bailey describes the skirmishes and battles of the 9th Kentucky in Tennessee and Georgia. 

Biographical Note 

Chesley D. Bailey enlisted in the 9th Kentucky Infantry on 19 March 1862 as a Captain. He was promoted to Lt. Colonel on 18 May 1863. He was married to Elizabeth Berry. He commanded the 9th Kentucky from 3 May to 26 June while Col. Cram was ill. He was wounded in the femoral artery at Jonesboro outside of Atlanta was discharged in October 1864 due to his injury.
