Scope and Content Note
Collection is made up of 24 folders and is contained in four boxes. Personal correspondence from 1914-1919 is of primary importance and gives a detailed look at life on a small, family farm in Metcalfe County, Ky. Topics discussed include poultry breeding, planting and harvesting crops, caring for livestock, family, friends, a severe influenza outbreak, attending Western Kentucky State Normal School in Bowling Green, Ky., and World War I. Additionally, business correspondence from 1914-1919 pertains to poultry breeding, the Rural Letter Carriers Association, the possibility of opening a movie theater in Summer Shade, J.L. Barton’s general store, etc. Also includes J.L. Barton’s personal financial documents, and his business receipts. Miscellaneous items are also present.

J. LelonBarton – Summer Shade, Ky., in Metcalfe County. Small farmer, poultry breeder, rural letter carrier, and store owner. Married to Florence Bowman Barton.
Florence Barton – Summer Shade, Ky., in Metcalfe County. Housewife. Married to J. Lelon Barton.
Eva Barton – Alone, Ky., and Edmonton, Ky., both in Metcalfe County. Student at Western Kentucky State Normal School, and later, a teacher in Edmonton. Sister of J. Lelon Barton.
Claud C. Bowman – United States Navy Physician’s Mate. Brother of Florence Bowman Barton.
Effie Cook – Tompkinsville, Ky., in Monroe County. Housewife. Sister of Florence Bowman Barton.
Estella Smith – Nobob, Ky., in Barren County. Sister of Florence Bowman Barton.
Blanche Bowman – Bowling Green, Ky., in Warren County. Sister of Florence Bowman Barton.
