Scope and Content Note 

Collection spans 1858-1930 and is contained in 24 folders. It is in three boxes. The bulk of the collection is made up of Irving C. and Austin G. Bartlett’s personal and business papers. Topics of interest are a Russellville, Ky. quarry, the Louisville and Nashville Railroad, distillery and tobacco industries, Freemasons, baseball, Indian rights, Daniel Boone, and anti-Catholic feelings. It also includes tobacco tags, ca. 1880s, and a Confederate Association of Kentucky Constitution and By-laws pamphlet. 

Biographical Note 

Irving Chapin Bartlett, son of Phipps Waldo Bartlett and Emily Byrd (Chapin) Bartlett, was born in Clarksburg, Va., (now W. Va.) on 19 December 1842. He married Ella Glazebrook; and the couple had one son, Austin Glazebrook Bartlett. Bartlett died on 10 July 1893. 

Bartlett received his early education in Flemingsburg, Ky., and graduated from high school in Convington, Ky. After graduating from Centre College in Danville, Ky., in 1861, he enlisted in the military of the Confederate States of America and served under the command of General John Hunt Morgan. After being wounded at Edgefield, Tenn., Bartlett was discharged and moved to Louisville, Ky. In 1865 he began working at the Second National Bank. Later on, Bartlett became a partner in John Callaghan and Company, a whiskey wholesaler. 

Austin Glazebrook Bartlett, son of Irving Chapin Bartlett and Ella (Glazebrook) Bartlett, was born in Louisville, Ky., and graduated from the University of Virginia. From 1909-1919 he served as Vice-President and Treasurer of the W. J. Sparks Company of Mt. Vernon, Ky., and from 1921-1925 he operated a stone quarry in Russellville, Ky. He was married to Bess (Sparks) Bartlett.
