Boston-Townes Family Papers, 1887-1920

Held by The Filson Historical Society

Creator: Boston-Townes family

Title: Papers, 1887-1920

Rights: For information regarding literary and copyright interest for these papers, see the Curator of Special Collections.

Size of Collection: 0.33 cubic feet and one volume

Location Number: Mss./A/B747

Scope and Content Note

The Boston-Townes family Papers consist of correspondence between members of the Boston and Townes families, chiefly Edna Townes (nee Boston), her husband Isaac Townes, and her mother Alice Boston.  These papers document farm life, family life, and the professional life of a doctor during the years 1877-1920.

The correspondence is arranged chronologically, and features both original letters and a volume of transcriptions which contains additional letters not donated.  The letters discuss life on the Boston family farm in lower McLean County, Kentucky, including harvesting, school, and selling crops.  They also discuss classes and the cost of tuition for Edna Boston, who studied for one year at Eminence College in Eminence, Kentucky.

Edna later married Dr. Isaac “Ike” Townes, and letters frequently discuss his professional duties, a graduate school for medicine he attended in Chicago, and their family life.  Later letters to their son, Fay, discuss his career prospects and mention his service in the United States Navy during World War I.

The transcription was a project to publish a book entitled Edna Earle Boston Townes, March 27, 1871-October 24, 1920: An Autobiographical Biography.  It contains transcriptions of both the original letters and additional letters that were not donated.  The letters in this volume are arranged by broad themes, and the volume also includes a chronology of Edna Earle Boston Townes’ life, brief family histories and biographical sketches by various members of the family, and five recipes.  Footnotes to the transcriptions provide additional context for events and individuals mentioned in the letters.

Much of the work of collecting the letters and creating the transcripts was performed by Edna Townes’ grand-daughter, Martha Townes Grattan.  After Grattan’s death in 2007 the work of editing the volume was finished by Joyce Colony, a professional editor.

The collection also includes different versions of the transcription volume, as well as family trees (folders 13-14).

A CD containing digital copies of Edna Earle Boston Townes, March 27, 1871-October 24, 1920: An Autobiographical Biography and 76 photographs is included with the finding aid. Photos depict property, gravestones, and individuals associated with the Boston and Townes family. Many photos have captions describing the contents of the photo. Only one original photo, of an unidentified woman, is included within the collection. This photo is in the finding aid folder.

Biographical Note

Alice Clay Harper married Charles Oliver Boston in 1870.  Charles and Alice Boston lived in lower McLean County, Kentucky. Their daughter, Edna Boston (1871-1920), wrote the majority of the letters contained in this collection.  Edna Boston attended Eminence College, Eminence, Ky., from September 1888 to June 1889.  Edna Boston married Dr. Isaac Townes (1867-1944) in 1892, and the two were the parents of Dr. Charles Dwight Townes (1899-1972).  Dr. Charles Townes was Chairman of the Division and Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Louisville from 1941 to 1965. Another child, Fay Townes, graduated from the University of Kentucky with a degree in Agriculture, and served in the United States Navy during World War I.  Their daughter, Pauline Townes Finley (1910-1988), married Gordon B. Finley, Sr. (1908-1990) around 1935 and was a teacher in the Jefferson County Public School system.  She and her husband were both in the Army, and are buried in the Zachary Taylor National Cemetery in Louisville, Kentucky.

The Julian G. Brooks letters are those letters sent to Sgt. Julian Brooks during World War II. He is from Chicago, which is also the home of his direct family. His mother and sister, Cecile; write the most often, along with a number of letters from his brother, Donald, cousins, and other relatives in Washington, DC, Selma and Prairie, AL, Henderson and London, KY. The direct family correspondents write candidly about day-to-day life and general current events of the time. Other family and friends stateside write of attending universities, night life, and ask him questions. Brooks also receives letters from friends serving in the military across the globe and write using U. S. Army letterheads or V-mail forms.

His mother writes about his younger brother Donald skipping classes and his pursuit and receipt of work at the Post Office, the long hours worked by his father, the holidays, visits from friends and relatives, and the use of his service pay for house repairs. Cecile keeps her brother up to date on the Chicago jazz scene, working night shifts, and attending college during the day, and many letters chronicle her relationship with George. She elopes with him they live at the Brooks house and she becomes pregnant while he is away.

Education is a common subject within the letters. His sister, Cecile, tells Brooks to use his G.I. Bill when he returns from abroad, and finances her tuition at an unnamed school with plans to attend Loyola for social service work. His cousin Ruth graduated high school and applied to Hampton Institute (VA). Jacquelyn Gordon in Washington, DC, dropped out of school her senior year to take a job in the War Department, then reconsidered and enrolled at Howard University, and then decided to work on her Master’s degree at the University of Chicago. Cousin Lorena in Henderson, KY, worked at the Douglas High School, part of Henderson City Schools. The Educational Director of the Lincoln Institute of Kentucky, Whitney Young, writes a generic letter of encouragement to Brooks, greeting him with ‘Dear Pupil.’

Correspondence received from friends in the military include “John B.” of the 618th Bombardment Squadron, 477th Bomb Group at Godman Field, KY; Pfc. James H. Williams, Jr. in New Guinea; S/Sgt. Nathaniel Freeman in Italy; “Lawrence,” stationed in New Guinea and the Philippines; Col. Jesse Williams in India; and a Pfc. James A. Jones. Each offers limited thoughts about their war experiences and are more prone to writing details of recreational affairs or complaints about the jungles where many are located. A few of them write using slang words.

Biographical Note

Ernest Christian Bohne (1840-1909)

Born February 8, 1840 in Cassell, Germany to Johann J. J. and Helen Maria (Wurtemberger) Bohne. Bohne’s father was a successful publisher and bookseller, and was an officer in Napoleon’s army during the Russian campaign from 1810-1812.

E.C. Bohne was educated at an elite gymnasium in Germany, but in 1854 left school and began learning the book trade. Not content with this line of work, Bohne went to sea and landed at New Orleans in 1856. From there, he traveled immediately upriver and settled in Louisville. In 1861, Bohne found employment as a bookkeeper in a dry goods store. During the Civil War he served with a company of home guards as quartermaster sergeant. In 1862 Bohne began work as the office manager and bookkeeper at the Louisville Hotel, a position he held for some ten years.

In 1863, Bohne married Amelia Marie German and together the two had a daughter and four sons: Hellen Bohne (Mrs. Henry Schimpeler), Charles Otto Bohne, Ferdinand W. Bohne, Philip Judge Bohne, and Ernest F. Bohne.

In 1872, Bohne organized the Western German Savings bank and became its cashier. Two years later, the bank was reorganized as the Third National bank of Louisville. Bohne remained as cashier of the bank until 1905 when he transferred to the Southern National Bank.

Bohne won acclaim as an astute banker and financier, delivering numerous addresses and authoring several papers on banking issues. During his career, he transacted business for the British Consul in Baltimore and the Imperial German Consul in Cincinnati.

In addition to his exemplary career in the banking industry, Bohne took a lead role in Louisville’s civic affairs. From 1867 to 1870, he served as a school trustee, from 1877 to 1880 as a charity commissioner, and in 1891 as a member of the first board of park commissioners. As a park commissioner, Bohne was instrumental in selecting the sites for Cherokee and Shawnee parks, and in entrusting the development of the parks to Olmsted and Co, the most prominent landscape architects of the day.

Bohne died March 24, 1909 in Louisville.

Bodley Family Papers, 1773-1939

Held by The Filson Historical Society

Creator: Bodley family

Title: Papers, 1773-1939

Rights: For information regarding literary and copyright interests for these papers, contact the Curator of Special Collections.

Size of Collection: 9.33 cubic feet

Locator Number: Mss.AB668e

Biographical Note

This collection of papers primarily spans three generations of Bodley’s, beginning with Thomas Bodley, moving then to William Stewart Bodley, and concluding with Temple Bodley. The correspondence is between numerous members of the Bodley family and its related families, friends, business associates, and acquaintances.

Thomas Bodley was born to William Bodley and Isabella Parker Bodley on July 4, 1772 near Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. His family moved to Lexington where he spent most of his life. Temple Bodley’s memoir states that he “was a soldier in the War of 1812, an officer (quarter-master general) under, and an intimate friend of, Gen. W. Henry Harrison, a close friend and of Henry Clay, and for many years was the Circuit Clerk of Fayette County-an office which, in the old times, was not only profitable but far more reputable that nowadays. He was a man of considerable influence in Kentucky and related by blood and connected by marriage with many influential families…. Gen. Thomas Bodley, like many men of that day, owned a great number of large tracts of valuable wild lands in the state. He lived generously from all accounts, lost money in some of his large land ventures, had a large family and left a small estate.” Thomas Bodley married Katherine Harris Shiell on August 19, 1785 and died in Lexington of cholera on June 11, 1833.

William Stewart Bodley was born on June 6, 1806 in Lexington. He received a law degree from Transylvania University in 1825, practiced law in Maysville, New Orleans, and finally moved to Vicksburg, Mississippi in 1830. In 1835 he married Ellen Pearce. The couple stayed in Vicksburg until 1849 when they moved to Louisville. William served in the Kentucky House of Representatives from 1855 to 1857. Bodley died April 8, 1877 in Louisville.

Temple Bodley was born in Louisville in 1852. He attended the University of Virginia and the University of Louisville School of Law where he graduated in 1875. He went on to practice law from which he retired in 1903. He then turned his talents to writing history. He wrote a biography of George Rogers Clark and a history of Kentucky. He died in 1940 in Louisville and was buried in Cave Hill Cemetery. For more information consult the Kentucky Encyclopedia.

Brinton, Nathan S. Papers, 1863-1864

Held by The Filson Historical Society

Creator: Nathan S. Brinton

Title: Papers, 1863-1864

Rights: For information regarding literary and copyright interest for these papers, contact the Curator of Special Collections.

Size of Collection: 0.33 cubic feet

Location Number: Mss./A/B858c

Scope and Content Note

These are the papers of Major Nathan Sharpless Brinton which chiefly document the loss of $2.6 million of Union Army payroll during the sinking of the Steamer Ruth on the Mississippi River near Cairo, Illinois on the night of 4 August 1863. Brinton was paymaster for the money, and collected documents related to the trial held to determine his culpability in the loss. Papers include statements by witnesses, proceedings of a court of inquiry, a board of survey report, and General Order No. 344 which found no misconduct in the loss of the funds. Finally, there is also an 1864 letter of promotion to Brinton’s younger brother, Joseph Painter Brinton.

Folder 1 consists of statements and depositions by various witnesses and other individuals associated with the Steamer Ruth . It is likely that versions or copies of these documents are found in “Proceedings of a Court of Inquiry…” Statements and depositions are included from Peter Vandevort (Pilot of the Ruth), Major William H. Jameson (Paymaster), Major J. W. Brigden (Paymaster), Major George L. Febiger (Paymaster), Major J. M. Pumphrey (Paymaster), Major T. D. Greenwalt (Paymaster), L. S. Ellithorp (Diver), and J. H. Beidler (Doctor). These documents are dated August 1863. Folder 1 of this collection has been digitized. To view PDF scans, click on the links provided in the folder list below.

Folder 2 consists of a document entitled “Proceedings of a Court of Inquiry Commenced by the Special Orders No. 408 Was Department Adjunct General’s Office, Washington, Sept. 11 th 1863. Destruction of Steamer Ruth by Fire!” This is a copy of court proceedings and statements prepared for Major Nathan S. Brinton regarding the destruction of the Union Army payroll on the Steamer Ruth .

The examinations and statements concern the fire on board the Steamer Ruth , possible causes, the subsequent sinking of the Ruth , and the destruction of the Union Army payroll on the ship. Witnesses discuss where they were when the fire broke out, their subsequent actions, and what they witnessed during the fire and subsequent evacuation of the ship. Witnesses are also questioned as to any possible allegiance or sympathy to the Confederate States of America.

As it was compiled from two or possibly three separate sources, and the pagination within the second portion is not in order, the logical order of this document can be confusing. A general table of contents is as follows:

Part I

Page 1-63: Proceedings of a Court of Inquiry

Part II
