Biographical Note
This collection of papers primarily spans three generations of Bodley’s, beginning with Thomas Bodley, moving then to William Stewart Bodley, and concluding with Temple Bodley. The correspondence is between numerous members of the Bodley family and its related families, friends, business associates, and acquaintances.
Thomas Bodley was born to William Bodley and Isabella Parker Bodley on July 4, 1772 near Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. His family moved to Lexington where he spent most of his life. Temple Bodley’s memoir states that he “was a soldier in the War of 1812, an officer (quarter-master general) under, and an intimate friend of, Gen. W. Henry Harrison, a close friend and of Henry Clay, and for many years was the Circuit Clerk of Fayette County-an office which, in the old times, was not only profitable but far more reputable that nowadays. He was a man of considerable influence in Kentucky and related by blood and connected by marriage with many influential families…. Gen. Thomas Bodley, like many men of that day, owned a great number of large tracts of valuable wild lands in the state. He lived generously from all accounts, lost money in some of his large land ventures, had a large family and left a small estate.” Thomas Bodley married Katherine Harris Shiell on August 19, 1785 and died in Lexington of cholera on June 11, 1833.
William Stewart Bodley was born on June 6, 1806 in Lexington. He received a law degree from Transylvania University in 1825, practiced law in Maysville, New Orleans, and finally moved to Vicksburg, Mississippi in 1830. In 1835 he married Ellen Pearce. The couple stayed in Vicksburg until 1849 when they moved to Louisville. William served in the Kentucky House of Representatives from 1855 to 1857. Bodley died April 8, 1877 in Louisville.
Temple Bodley was born in Louisville in 1852. He attended the University of Virginia and the University of Louisville School of Law where he graduated in 1875. He went on to practice law from which he retired in 1903. He then turned his talents to writing history. He wrote a biography of George Rogers Clark and a history of Kentucky. He died in 1940 in Louisville and was buried in Cave Hill Cemetery. For more information consult the Kentucky Encyclopedia.
