Size of Collection:  1 cu. ft. and 1 ovsz. folder

Location Number:  Mss./ A/R978b

Scope and Content Note

Papers of several members of the Rowe-Myers family of Louisville, Kentucky, especially documenting the family’s involvement in World War II. The three oldest sons in the family – Albert “Owen”, Herbert, and Charles Rowe – all served in the military during the war. In addition, the collection also includes correspondence of the youngest son, Robert H. Rowe, who joined the Marines after the war, and a daughter, Grace Wanda Rowe Myers. The collection documents the military service of young men, as well as domestic life in Louisville in the World War II era. The collection has been organized by the child, although some of their parents’ correspondence is also present within the collection.

Folders 1-13 contain Albert “Owen” Rowe’s papers, including correspondence, military papers, estate papers, and samples of his writing. Owen’s letters to and from his parents, 1939-1944, provide details about his military service in the Field Artillery, and later the Air Corps during World War II. Owen was stationed at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii during the bombing of Pearl Harbor (although he did not write about the attack). His correspondence touches on his desire to become a journalist upon completion of his service; his papers include several articles and samples of his writing, as well as correspondence with publishers. Owen was killed in action over Germany on July 7, 1944 after his plane was hit by antiaircraft fire. The collection contains official correspondence his mother received from the military, as well as from friends, regarding his MIA status and death.

Folders 14-20 contain Herbert Oren “Skeeks” Rowe’s papers, including correspondence and a war ration book. Herbert’s letters to and from his parents, 1937-1960, provide details about his World War II service and subsequent military career. Herbert initially attempted to become a pilot, but washed out of aeronautics school because he got airsick. He subsequently served in the 191st Tank Battalion, which was stationed in North Africa and Italy during 1943-1944. He was seriously wounded by machine gunfire in Italy on May 23rd, 1944. He recuperated for several months in military hospitals and then returned to military service. Following the end of the war, he was stationed in Saipan with the American Graves Registration Service, a group responsible for burial of Pacific War dead.

Folders 21-32 contain Charles Everett Rowe’s papers, including correspondence, military papers, drawings, and estate papers. Charles served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II from 1942-1944. His papers document his military training at Parris Island, South Carolina and subsequent service aboard the USS Alabama. Charles suffered a mental breakdown in 1944; his papers contain details about his illness, symptoms, and treatment at military hospitals. Charles remained in an institutionalized setting for the rest of his life.

Folders 33-35 contain Robert H. Rowe’s correspondence to his mother. Robert joined the U.S. Marine Corps and trained at Parris Island, South Carolina from September-November 1946. His letters provide details about the training regimen and daily routine for recruits going through boot camp.

Folders 36-41 contain the papers of Grace Wanda “Pat” Rowe Myers and her husband Jesse “Red” Myers. Correspondence includes letters written by Pat to her older brother Albert Owen; she also corresponded with her family while living in Long Beach, California during 1944-1945 where her husband was stationed during the war. A few items documenting Jesse Myers’ military service are also present.

Folder 42 contains letters written by Harold S. Sauter to Bessie Rowe while he was in the Navy during World War II. Sauter was a school friend of Charles Everett Rowe. His letters to his friend’s mother are flirtatious in nature.

Folder 43 contains Japanese currency notes.

Folder 44 is oversize and contains Albert Owen Rowe’s ROTC certificate, 1938.

Biographical Note

Hetsley Rowe and Bessie Katharine Acton Rowe had seven children: Eloise R., Grace Wanda, Albert “Owen”, Herbert “Skeeks” Oren, Charles Everett, Wilda, and Robert. The Rowes encouraged their sons to pursue military careers. Owen, Herbert, and Charles served in the military during World War II. Sgt. Owen served as a gunner on a B-17. Lt. Herbert commanded a tank in Italy. Pvt. Charles joined the Marines and served with a gun crew on the USS Alabama. Owen was killed when his plane was shot down over Germany on July 7, 1944. Herbert was seriously wounded on May 23, 1944 when his tank was hit by enemy fire. Charles saw action on the Alabama and suffered a nervous breakdown; he struggled with mental illness for the remainder of his life. The youngest son, Robert, also pursued military training, joining the Marines in 1946.

Daughter Grace Wanda “Pat” Rowe married Jesse “Red” Burge Myers of Louisville, Kentucky on June 22, 1942. Jesse enlisted into the Army Air Force during World War II. At the time of her marriage, Wanda worked as a secretary for the Girdler Corporation in Louisville, Kentucky. In 1944, she left Louisville to join Jesse at his base on Long Beach, California, where she worked briefly for the Long Beach Chamber of Commerce. She returned to Louisville six months later when Jesse was shipped to Guam. Jesse was relieved from duty in 1946 and returned to Louisville, where he had worked at LG&E prior to the war.

Harold S. Sauter was a neighbor to the Rowes when they lived on East Breckinridge Street in Louisville and attended school with Charles Rowe. Harold also joined the military during World War II and served on a gun crew with the US Navy.

Biographical Note

William Campbell Preston Breckinridge was a prominent figure in Kentucky history. He was born into the Breckinridge political family, and served during the Civil War for the Confederacy. Breckinridge later became known as an orator, member of the House of Represenatives, and an attorney. Breckinridge had a troubled private life. During his marriage to his second wife, Issa, he began a relationship with a seventeen year old girl named Madeline Pollard. After his wife’s death, Breckinridge promised to marry Pollard, but instead married another woman, Louise Scott Wing. Following the disclosure of Breckinridge’s third marriage, Pollard sued him for “Breach of Promise.” The trial occurred in Washington D.C., and related delicate information. The verdict was called in Pollard’s favor. The trial, and the information that was disclosed from it had serious consequences for Breckinridge, as the community withdrew much of their support from him.

Biographical Note

In 2010, historian Rusty Williams published a history of the Confederate Home in Pewee Valley, Kentucky, titled My Old Confederate Home: A Respectable Place for Civil War Veterans. The research material collected for the book comprises this collection. The Kentucky Confederate Home located in Pewee Valley, Kentucky, was created to help provide for Confederate veterans who were struggling to take care of themselves. The creation of the home was a group effort of the state, fellow Confederate veterans, and the public. The aid of the community and the state towards Confederate veterans was crucial as the Federal Government did not provide financial aid to veterans of the Confederacy. Established in 1902, the Confederate Home served about 1,000 veterans for thirty-four years. At the home, residents had access to services and resources including, but not limited to, healthcare and a library. A newspaper, “Confederate Home Messenger,” was published in association with the home. The home was damaged by a fire in 1920 but remained open for fourteen more years, closing in 1934.

Folder 6 of this collection has been digitized. To view PDF scan, click on the link provided in the folder list below.

Biographical Note

The 7th Kentucky Infantry was organized at Camp Dick Robinson and mustered in for a three-year enlistment on 22 September 1861. It was mustered in as the 3rd Regiment Kentucky Volunteer Infantry under the command of Colonel Theophilus T. Garrard. Another regiment was also mustered in as the 3rd Kentucky Infantry about the same time, so the designation was changed. However, members of the 7th regiment continued to call it the 3rd Kentucky (or “old Third”) well into 1863. The regiment participated in several battles in the Vicksburg Campaign (1863), including the Battle of Thompson’s Hill and the Siege of Vicksburg. The regiment was initially mustered out of service in Louisville, Kentucky, on 5 October 1864. However, veterans from the 7th were combined with veterans from two other regiments and new recruits to form the 7th Kentucky Veteran Volunteer Infantry on 24 December 1864. After spending several months in garrison duty at Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the regiment was mustered out 11 March 1866.

United States Army, Commissary of Subsistence Records, 1861-1865

Held by The Filson Historical Society

Creator:  United States. Army. Commissary of Subsistence

Title:  Records, 1861-1865

Size of Collection:  4 volumes

Location Number:  Mss. BG U58e

Scope and Content Note

This collection is a significant archive of Union Commissary of Subsistence operations in the western theater during the Civil War. Stationed in Louisville, Kentucky, Capt. H. C. Symonds was responsible for millions of dollars of supplies for the Department of the Cumberland, the Department of the Ohio, and the Army of the Kentucky. The collection provides insight into food consumption by Union troops during the war, as well as the logistical challenges involved in supplying necessities to the soldiers. The collection consists of a register of telegrams sent and received by Symonds, January 1864 – August 1865; a register of letters received by Symonds, December 1864 – November 1865; and a ledger book containing a record of financial transactions, June 1861 – November 1865.

Volume 1 is a binder containing collected research on Capt. Henry C. Symonds and his role as Commissary of Subsistence. Included is biographical information on Symonds, as well as excerpts from his book Report of a Commissary of Subsistence, 1861-1865. Also included are copies of official correspondence published in War of the Rebellion concerning Symonds and the Commissary Department in Louisville. Excerpts from War of the Rebellion especially concern an investigation into Symonds’ failure to adequately supply troops in Nashville in the summer of 1862. Also included is biographical information on Dr. Mary Walker — Civil War surgeon, POW, and Medal of Honor recipient.

Volume 2 is a journal labeled “Telegrams”, containing copies of telegrams sent and received by Symonds from 12 January 1864 to 31 August 1865. Telegrams concern prices and the purchase of foodstuffs; correspondence with companies contracted to supply various products; logistics regarding the shipment of rations; requests for funds from Washington, D.C. or other commissaries; and correspondence with military authorities, including Stephen G. Burbridge, the “Butcher of Kentucky”. From 1864-1865, Symonds primarily sent supplies to Nashville, Tennessee, and Eastport, Mississippi. He was also involved in supplying Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman’s troops. Of particular interest are several telegrams sent to Col. A. Beckwith, Sherman’s commissary officer, regarding supplies for Sherman’s troops during the Atlanta Campaign in 1864. Commissaries of subsistence in other cities are frequent correspondents, including commissaries in Cincinnati, St. Louis, Nashville, Chicago, Evansville and Madison, Indiana, Washington, D.C., and Eastport, Mississippi.

Volume 3 is a journal labeled “Endorsements on Letters” and contains a register of letters received by Symonds from 9 December 1864 to 26 November 1865. Letters concern personnel issues, including resignations, reassignments, and promotions; as well as the settlement of bills and accounts with suppliers and service providers. Several letters concern poor quality foodstuffs received from suppliers; others regard questions about regulations for the issue of rations, including to the families of African American soldiers. There is also a significant amount of correspondence with hospital administrators, including Surgeon R. Gilbert, superintendent and medical director of the hospitals in Louisville; these letters concern supplies and rations for the hospitals, as well as financial matters. Another frequent correspondent is Capt. Samuel T. Cushing, director of the Commissary’s bakery operations in Jeffersonville, Indiana. As the war draws to a close, a flurry of correspondence concerns inventory and inspections reports, and arrangements for the disposition of supplies.

Volume 4 is a ledger book: “Cash Account of Capt. H. C. Symonds, C.S., U.S. Army.” It contains entries from June 1861 through November 1865, and is filled with meticulous entries pertaining to orders of rations for troops. The ledger lists companies and individuals involved in transactions, including the amounts paid for stores, property, and services provided.

Rotary Club of Louisville Records, 1912-2016

Held by The Filson Historical Society

Creator:  Rotary Club of Louisville

Title:  Records, 1912-2016

Rights: For information regarding literary and copyright interest for these papers, contact the Curator of Collections.

Size of Collection:  12 cubic feet

Location Number:  Mss. BM R842

Scope and Content Note

The collection consists of the records of the Rotary Club of Louisville, a service organization founded in 1912 with a membership drawn from local business and professional leaders. Included in the papers, dating from 1912-2016, are minute books, financial records, membership rosters, and Sparks newsletters. Records document the organizations and programs that the Rotary Club of Louisville helped to support with funds and volunteer service. They provide information about individual members and their businesses. The collection also details the meetings, dinners, and other events held to provide opportunities for club members to socialize and to develop business connections with each other.

Boxes 1-4 contain the minute books and other records of the Rotary Club of Louisville from 1912-2015. Box 4 includes the records of the Rotary Fund of Louisville, a nonprofit organization incorporated in 1951 to manage Rotary Club funds for educational and charitable purposes. Among the records of the Rotary Club and the Rotary Fund are Articles of Incorporation, original and amended versions of the by-laws, meeting minutes, financial statements, legal agreements, correspondence, and service project materials.

Box 5 contains the annual membership rosters for the Rotary Club of Louisville from 1912-2008. The bound rosters were distributed to members as a handbook, with lists of officers and committees, and a photographic image of and information about each member.

Boxes 6-12 contain the remaining annual membership rosters from 2008-2016 and the Sparks newsletters from 1913-2010. Initially the Sparks newsletters, distributed to club members, were published by the Rotary Club of Louisville every two weeks. In 1927, the Rotary Club began publishing the newsletters weekly. The newsletters contain information about Rotary Club meetings and service programs, members and their businesses, and details about upcoming social events. Each issue introduces the speaker and subject for the next meeting, such as a speaker on “The Red Menace” in the early 1920s, a female psychologist’s talk on “How to Manage a Woman – A Command Appearance for Your Secretary” in 1961, and a presentation by a Pan-African Studies professor in 2002. Local and state political candidates and office-holders also gave talks at club meetings. In addition, the newsletters include local advertisements. In 1987, issues of Sparks give updates on a California court case dealing with the question of whether the Rotary Club could exclude women from membership. After the case ends with the Supreme Court ruling that states could outlaw sex discrimination by all-male private clubs like the business-oriented Rotary Club, a Sparks issue from September 1987 welcomes Patricia W. Hart as the Louisville club’s first female member.

Biographical Note

The Rotary Club of Louisville was chartered on July 23, 1912, as a service organization of local business and professional leaders. The 40 charter members of the Rotary Club of Louisville became part of an international association of service clubs, all modeled after the first Rotary Club established in Chicago in 1905, and all allowing only men as members until 1987. Two mottoes for the association of Rotary Clubs were “He Profits Most Who Serves Best” and “Service above Self.” While the name Rotary Club referred to the practice of rotating weekly meetings among members’ places of business, the Louisville Rotarians settled into a pattern of meeting at the Brown Hotel by the mid-1920s. After the Brown Hotel closed in 1971 (it later reopened in 1985), the club held meetings in a variety of locations, such as the Holiday Inn on Zorn Avenue, Jim Porter’s Tavern, and Churchill Downs.

Like other Rotary Clubs, Louisville’s club focused on both fellowship and service. Louisville Rotarians began to publish a newsletter called Sparks for members in 1913, and they briefly broadcast a radio program in the early 1920s. Social events, such as dinners and baseball games, provided members opportunities to get to know each other and to develop business connections. Early service activities included a student loan fund for “worthy boys” at Male and Manual high schools, aid to residents in Louisville and eastern Kentucky during the 1937 Ohio River flood, and support for servicemen during World War II. In the second half of the twentieth century, the Louisville club expanded the reach of its service activities. It continued to focus on organizations and youth programs in Louisville but also contributed to Rotary International projects, such as efforts to eradicate polio and to redistribute surplus medical supplies from the United States to developing countries. When Rotary International opened membership to women in 1987, Patricia W. Hart, who had worked as executive director of the Louisville club, became Louisville’s first female member. As of 2018, the Rotary Club of Louisville is the 14th largest of the 34,000 Rotary Clubs around the world.
