Content

These scrapbook volumes document the planning, implementation, and results of the survey "Louisville's Jewish Women: A 1981 Survey of Ideas, Activities, and Opinions." The survey was conducted through the Louisville Section of the National Council of Jewish Women under the direction of Sonia Levine (a University of Louisville Urban Affairs graduate student) and Dr. Marcia Segal (a sociologist at Indiana University Southeast). Levine and Segal aimed to compile a comprehensive list of survey participants in Louisville who were Jewish women or who were women with Jewish family members. Segal's administrative assistant Paula Sylvester worked with Segal to compile the data from the survey. The two volumes consist of a bound scrapbook and folders of loose materials. They include notes and correspondence about the making and distribution of the survey; lists of the volunteers and organizations providing support; drafts and final copies of the survey; copies of the code book; punched-out computer cards, quantitative reports, conference papers, and published articles about the results; newspaper clippings; a few photographs of Levine and Segal; and a copy of a 1980 Virginia Slims American women's opinion poll. Materials provide information about sociological methods at the time, and the survey results document Louisville Jewish women's education and work status, marriage and family relations, religious life, Jewish community involvement, household and volunteer work, health and economic concerns, political attitudes, and opinions about issues such as gender roles and abortion.
