Chowning enlisted in the army November 28, 1941. He appears to have initially served with Battery E, 90th Coast Artillery (Anti-Aircraft regiment) in Northern Africa. His letters indicate that he spent some time in Casablanca during the war.  After leaving northern Africa around October 1944, his unit appears to have travelled throughout Europe including Italy, France, and Germany. In December 1944, he was promoted to Captain, and by that time was associated with the 4379th Quartermaster Truck Company. He was discharged from the Army on February 27, 1946.

In 1948, he married Marion Elizabeth Coleman, with whom he had two daughters. He died July 6, 1974 in Louisville, Kentucky.

Cheek, Martha Butt Photograph Collection, 1850-1977

Title: Photograph Collection, 1850-1977

Size of Collection: 433 items

Location Number: 008PC25

Scope and Content Note

Genealogical photos, daguerreotypes and tintypes of Martha Butt Cheek’s family. Families included in the photos are: Butt, Townsend, Offutt, Ewing, De Graffenried, and Sandifer.

Also included are historical photos of Logan County, Kentucky and Red River Church Meeting House.

Biographical Note

Martha Alberta Butt was born in 1892 to Dr. Albert L. and Elizabeth D. Townsend Butt, possibly in Logan County, Kentucky. Throughout her life, she collected and compiled genealogical data for various Kentucky families, including her own, and collected information on Kentucky state and church history. In particular, she focused on the Red River Church, Graveyard, and Meeting House, where the Great Revival of 1800 occurred. The culmination of her research came in the form of a manuscript entitled The Old Red River Meeting House and Morton Maulding’s Fort, in which she detailed the history of the church, its grounds, and the revival that took place there. Martha B. Cheek, as she was known after her marriage to Francis J. Cheek in 1924, served in the Red River Memorial Association, getting the organization statewide and national recognition. Even in her old age, despite illnesses and injuries, she continued her research by assisting people with their family genealogy. She passed away in 1987, at the age of 94.

Historical Note

In 1972, Kentucky Home School for Girls, the Kentucky Military Institute, and Louisville Country Day School merged to form Kentucky Country Day School (KCD). This merger also included Aquinas Preparatory School, which had consolidated with Louisville Country Day a few years earlier in 1967. KCD is a co-ed college prep school in Louisville for kindergarten through 12th grade. KCD was originally located on Rock Creek Drive, adjacent to Seneca Park, but in 1978, the school moved to its current campus on Springdale Road.

Kentucky Home School for Girls

The Kentucky Home School for Girls was founded in 1863 by Belle Peers, daughter of one-time Transylvania University president Rev. Benjamin Peers. The school started with a class of 12 students and over the years grew in size and reputation. In 1879, it moved from Chestnut Street to a larger campus on Third Street. In 1880, the school was officially incorporated. In 1904, Peers retired as principal, and KHS was purchased by Annie S. Anderson and Annie S. Waters.

In 1927, the school moved again, to the Bonnycastle mansion and cottage at 1649 Everett Ave. In 1929 the KHS Holding Corporation purchased an additional property close to Cherokee Park, where students could participate in outdoor activities such as horseback riding, volleyball, baseball, tennis, and archery (KHS was reportedly the first school in the region to introduce archery, importing targets, bows, and arrows from England). This site was also used for annual events such as May Day and the Mountain Fund Bazaar, which raised money to help the blind in rural Kentucky. Other early student activities included gymnastics, folk and aesthetic dancing, hockey, art exhibitions, theater, and the Glee Club, which often placed in the Kentucky State Music Contest.

Of the 180 girls who graduated from KHS between 1911 and 1932, three fourths entered higher education institutions. In 1948, the school moved to 2301 Douglas Blvd., where it remained until 1972, when it merged with the other schools to form Kentucky Country Day School. Some KHS traditions have been preserved at KCD: the KCD piano lab is dedicated to beloved KHS music teacher Amelia Moody, and senior girls still wear white dresses and carry roses at graduation ceremonies.

Kentucky Military Institute

Founded in 1845 by West Point graduate General Robert T. P. Allen, the Kentucky Military Institute was only the third military school in the country. The first classes were held in Franklin Springs, Farmdale, Kentucky. In 1896 the school moved to its campus in Lyndon, and in 1906 the school opened its other campus in Venice, Florida. Students and faculty spent the fall and spring in Kentucky and moved to Florida for the months of January, February, and March to avoid winter weather, shortened days, and seasonal illness.

KMI graduates volunteered in the Spanish-American War and served in Cuba and the Philippines. Approximately 300 alumni and former cadets served in World War I, and over 1,000 served in World War II. In 1984, twelve years after KMI merged with the other schools to form Kentucky Country Day, the KMI honor code was adopted by KCD.

Louisville Country Day was a college preparatory school for boys, incorporated in 1948 by a group of Louisville business and civic leaders. With donations from 143 Louisville families, the school was opened in 1951 with a campus on Rock Creek Lane. In the first year, 91 students were enrolled in grades 1 through 10. By 1953, the school had expanded to include 12 grades.

In 1967, Aquinas, a Catholic boys’ preparatory school founded in 1957 and comprising grades 1 through 12 and a preschool, was consolidated with LCD. Its campus became known as the Browns Lane Campus, home to preschool and grades 1 through 6, while the Rock Creek Lane Campus maintained grades 7 through 12.

Scope and Content Note

The collection contains photographs of early mule cars, electric streetcars, buses, and interurban rail cars. Also included are photographs of car barns, power houses, shops, work cars, maintenance equipment, and street scenes of tracks and cars. There are some photographs of employees and company functions, but most are not identified.

Historical Note

The Louisville Railway Company (later the Louisville Transit Company) was a privately owned company which operated the trolley and interurban lines in Louisville and adjacent suburban areas. Mule-drawn streetcars were on the streets of Louisville by 1866. In 1890, three local streetcar companies were merged to form the Louisville Railway Company and the conversion to electric trolleys began that same year. Electric railway lines were extended to suburban areas in 1901-1910, and the first buses were put into service in Louisville in 1923. Private operation of the transit system ended in the 1970s and the Transit Authority of River City (TARC) was established by city government to run the system.

Scope and Content Note

The Little-Bockhofer-Canaday Family Photograph Collection is housed separately in one original photo album (Album #68) and one folder held in the Small Groups files of the Filson Photographic Collections. The collection contains 48 photographic prints of various formats, primarily cabinet cards. Many of the photographic prints are housed in the original photo album containing 34 cabinet cards, one 1.5” x 2” print and one signed, printed card with floral design. The remaining 13 prints are housed individually in the small group file.

Members of the three families lived throughout Wayne County, Indiana, as well as other locations in Southern Indiana and Western Ohio, and were photographed in the towns of Economy, Richmond, Middleboro, Hallon, and Hagerstown, Indiana. Several photographs of the Canady (Canaday) family were taken in studios in California.

Biographical Note

The Little, Bockhofer, and Canaday families resided primarily in Wayne County, Indiana and nearby counties throughout the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. The collection documents the descendants and relatives of Isaac Little (1834-1907). Little was a farmer and served in the 84th Regiment of the Indiana Infantry during the Civil War. He married three times, first in 1855 to Nancy Ann Coffin (1834-1859), with whom he had three children: Rebecca June Little, Thursa Little, and Evaline Little. Little married Sally Coats Little (1844-1872) in 1862 and they had six children: Alistus, Charles, Clarisa Jane, George Morton (1868-1916), Minerva, and Elmer Elsworth Little (1872-1872). His third wife was Elizabeth Millet Little (1842-1904), whom he married in 1874. They had no children together.

The Bockhofer, Canaday and Alexander families are related to the Little family by marriage. Clarisa Jane Little married Edward H. Bockhofer (1869-1942) on 31 March 1894, and they had six children: Nellie, Anna Marea, William, Isaac Howard, Verlan Alistus, and Florence Elizabeth. Minerva Little married Clementine Alexander of Jefferson, Preble County, Ohio on 28 September 1895. Anna Marea Bockhofer married Lyndsey E. Canaday on 21 July 1917.

Scope and Content Note

Three rolls of drawings relate to improvements and the construction of structures on a property along Upper River Road in Prospect, Ky.  The property was first owned by Junius W. Bell; it is now known as Sand Hill and located at 10601 U.S. Highway 42, Prospect, Ky.  The home was on the Filson Historical Society’s house tour in 2006 and a copy of the tour notes are included with the collection.

Roll 1 contains a 1926 sketch and accompanying letters relating to the construction of a tenant house on Junius W. Bell’s property by W. Edwin Glossop, construction engineer at Standard Oil Company; land surveys, ca. 1926, of the Bell property near Todd and Two Mile roads; sketches relating to grading low-lying areas on the property; and the layout of sewer, water and oil lines for Bell’s residence in 1939.

Roll 2 contains blueprints for a residence for J. W. Bell by architect Carl D. Russell.  The residence was constructed ca. 1938-39 and drawings include the floor plans, cross section, and elevations.  A Colonial Revival design, the home likely reflects Bell’s appreciation of minimalism and solid construction.

Roll 3 contains a 2014 planting and paving plan for the residence (owned by Joe Seay at that time) by Rushing Design Co., a landscape architecture firm.
