Scope and Content Note

The collection is compiled of 71 photomechanical prints of past bank presidents and board members that represent the Louisville banking community over the decades. The prints were created off of copy prints by John T. Berry for display at the bank.

Historical Note 

National City Bank has had several names over the decades, originally called the First National Bank of Louisville established in 1863, the main branch located at 224 S. Fifth Street. The First National Bank of Louisville took responsibility for the debts of the National Bank of Kentucky in the 1930s and the banks became one, it was renamed First Kentucky by the mid-1930s. In the late 1980s First Kentucky National Corporation of Louisville which included First Kentucky merged with Cleveland based National City Corporation in 1988 and became known as the National City Bank of Kentucky until it was bought out by PNC.

Bank Locations

  • In 1925 the First National Bank of Louisville Main branch was located at 224 S. Fifth Street.
  • Bardstown branch of First National Bank located at 2223 Bardstown Road.
  • Either a second branch location on Bardstown road or a bank move placed a branch on 2118 Bardstown Road in 1934.
  • Shelby and Broadway branch located at 734 E. Broadway.
  • South Louisville branch located at the corner of South 4th Street and Central Avenue.
  • Portland branch located on Portland Avenue.

Avery was born in 1801 in Aurora, New York. He first began a plow company in 1825 in Clarksville, Pennsylvania, selling the company to a brother after returning to Aurora after the death of his father. Along with a nephew, Daniel Humphrey Avery, he moved to Louisville, KY and began his new plow business in 1847. When Daniel moved on in 1850, the company was organized as B.F. Avery Plows. Operation was suspended during the Civil War but reopened after the war as B.F. Avery & Sons, and now included his three sons. 1868-1869
