The Little-Bockhofer-Canaday Family Photograph Collection is housed separately in one original photo album (Album #68) and one folder held in the Small Groups files of the Filson Photographic Collections. The collection contains 48 photographic prints of various formats, primarily cabinet cards. Many of the photographic prints are housed in the original photo album containing 34 cabinet cards, one 1.5” x 2” print and one signed, printed card with floral design. The remaining 13 prints are housed individually in the small group file.

Members of the three families lived throughout Wayne County, Indiana, as well as other locations in Southern Indiana and Western Ohio, and were photographed in the towns of Economy, Richmond, Middleboro, Hallon, and Hagerstown, Indiana. Several photographs of the Canady (Canaday) family were taken in studios in California.

Biographical Note

The Little, Bockhofer, and Canaday families resided primarily in Wayne County, Indiana and nearby counties throughout the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. The collection documents the descendants and relatives of Isaac Little (1834-1907). Little was a farmer and served in the 84th Regiment of the Indiana Infantry during the Civil War. He married three times, first in 1855 to Nancy Ann Coffin (1834-1859), with whom he had three children: Rebecca June Little, Thursa Little, and Evaline Little. Little married Sally Coats Little (1844-1872) in 1862 and they had six children: Alistus, Charles, Clarisa Jane, George Morton (1868-1916), Minerva, and Elmer Elsworth Little (1872-1872). His third wife was Elizabeth Millet Little (1842-1904), whom he married in 1874. They had no children together.

The Bockhofer, Canaday and Alexander families are related to the Little family by marriage. Clarisa Jane Little married Edward H. Bockhofer (1869-1942) on 31 March 1894, and they had six children: Nellie, Anna Marea, William, Isaac Howard, Verlan Alistus, and Florence Elizabeth. Minerva Little married Clementine Alexander of Jefferson, Preble County, Ohio on 28 September 1895. Anna Marea Bockhofer married Lyndsey E. Canaday on 21 July 1917.
