The first document in this collection is a Certificate of Identity, issued by the War Department of the United States, authorizing Schweitzer to accompany Base Hospital No. 40 as a nurse. It is dated June 5, 1918, so there is a strong likelihood that her service is related to the First World War, although the document does not state where the unit she is with is expected to serve.
