A private in Co. C of the 3rd Ohio Infantry, Jarvis writes to his family from Camp Jefferson on Bacon Creek in Hart County, Ky. Although he comments that Union forces in the vicinity are "doing very little," he reports the recent destruction of the L&N railroad bridge on the Green River and frequent sounds of artillery fire in the distance. In a letter dated 29 Dec. 1861, he reports that Union artillery fired on a Munfordville home that displayed the Confederate flag. On 2 Jan. 1862 he writes, "we have had several big (military) reviews here" adding, "I think there will be a terrible battle in Ky. before long."
