A private who served in the 5th Ky. Inf. and the 2nd Ky. Cav., Franz A. Brohm wrote a post-war memoir that was translated by a German-American comrade and published in the Louisville Anzeiger in 1910. Brohm relates his arrival in Louisville in early 1861 and his subsequent enlistment in the Union army. He describes his unit's participation in all the major campaigns of the Army of the Cumberland (1861-1864), including the opening phase of the war in Kentucky and the Perryville Campaign.
