In a letter dated Oct. 21, 1861 at Columbus, Ky. Pvt. G(ideon) Gibson of the Crescent Regiment, Louisiana Infantry informs his sister (Elizabeth?) that he is well and thinking of home. He reports that a Confederate scouting party was "badly whipped last evening," adding that "there was 4 kill and 7 wounded about seven miles from (here.)" He continues, "There was only 15 of our men and about 100 of the Northerners." (Note: Contemporary newspaper reports indicate Gibson was referring to the ambush of a detachment of the 6th Tenn. Cavalry Battalion near the mouth of Mayfield Creek north of Columbus.)
