Letters and a diary copied by Herrold's widow into a journal. They tell of his movements with the 9th Indiana through Kentucky just before and after the battle of Perryville. He describes the entry of his regiment into the town of Danville with kisses from the girls and one soldier receiving a canteen full of whiskey.
