Letters of 5 & 7 March 1863 written by James Yeatman and Francis Blair support Hammond's desire for a Kentucky cavalry command. On 14 March 1863 Sherman writes the Governor of Kentucky stating Hammond would be " a good match for some of those Devils who keep your good state in a kind of nervous uneasiness".
