Content

The collection consists of papers of Rabbi Joseph Saltzman, who worked as a teacher and principal at the Louisville Hebrew School from 1922 until his retirement in 1962. He and his wife Leah Greenfield (Grinfeld) Saltzman emigrated to the United States in 1921 to escape the violence of pogroms in Baranivka, Ukraine, and settled in Louisville, Kentucky. Included in the collection are the following items: correspondence from 1922-1972, primarily addressing Rabbi Saltzman's Louisville Hebrew School salary and pension; a beginning Hebrew reader from ca. 1950; a publication dated 13 Dec. 1979 for the 75th Anniversary Chanukah Celebration at Louisville Hebrew School; and newspaper clippings about Joseph and Leah Saltzman, with some written by Rabbi Solomon Roodman and Herman Landau.
