Biographical Note

Clara Lee Garth (née Atchison) was born in Louisville in 1882 to Benjamin F. and Minnie (Warren) Atchison. Clara Lee Garth’s mother, Minnie Atchison, was the daughter of Levi Legg Warren and Mary Warren (née Wood). In 1906, Clara Lee Atchison married Dr. Charles Meredith Garth II (1879-1925), with whom she had two children, Charles Meredith Garth III (1913-1967) and Helen M. Garth (1916-1974).

Dr. Charles Meredith Garth II graduated from the University of Louisville medical school and practiced medicine, becoming a specialist in the treatment of tuberculosis. During World War I, he served in field hospitals both in the United States and overseas and was promoted to the rank of captain.

Charles Russell Garr was born on November 5, 1858 in Jefferson County, Kentucky. Garr studied medicine and relocated to Fleming County where he practiced medicine in the area. Garr married Sallie Rebecca Crain (1861-1950) in 1883, with whom he had two children: Charles Crain Garr (1884-1957) and Clyde Lewis Garr (1887-1968).

The Garr and Garth families appear to be related, although the exact relationship between the families is unclear to the archivist.

Ganter, H. C., Lantern Slides of Mammoth Cave and Vicinity, 1889 and ca. 1890s

Held by The Filson Historical Society

Creator: Ganter, H. C.

Title:  Lantern Slides of Mammoth Cave and Vicinity, 1889 and ca. 1890s.

Rights: For information regarding literary and copyright interest for these papers, contact the Collections Department.

Size of Collection:  25 black and white glass lantern slides

Location Number:  012PC27B

Scope and Content Note

There are twenty-five (25) black and white glass lantern slides, ca. 1889-1890s. Twenty (20) out of the twenty-five (25) are labeled with a title, slide number and state “Copyright and for sale by H. C. Ganter, Mam. Cave.” Slides appear to be from a larger set of slides, this collection only representing a handful. Each slide measures 3 ½” x 4”. The slides were removed from a wooden container, were placed in an acid-free box, and each slide is in an acid-free photographic sleeve.

Biographical Note

H. C. or Henry C. Ganter, 1844-1917, was the manager of Mammoth Cave and Hotel in Bowling Green, Kentucky (hotel circa 1887-1902, cave circa 1878-1902). During some of his time as cave manager, he also was the cave’s agent. While at the cave Ganter worked with and claimed copyright of many early Mammoth Cave images created by Ben Hains, a professional photographer from New Albany, Indiana. Most of the images within this collection are believed to be taken by Hains in 1889, later copyrighted and reproduced as stereo cards, postcards, and Lantern Slides by Ganter probably for selling. In May 1902, the Kentucky Courts removed Ganter as cave manager and W. Scott Miller, Jr., of Louisville became his successor. While the news of Ganter’s dismissal made the New York Times, little is known about why he was dismissed.

Other Breckinridge Family papers are held by the Filson Historical Society within the Special Collections Department.

Historical Note

Since Kentucky was established as a state in 1792, the Breckinridge family has gained notoriety not only in Kentucky but also in national politics.  To date, the family has included six members of the U.S. House of Representatives, two U.S. Senators, a cabinet member, two Ambassadors, and the Vice President of the United States under James Buchanan, John C. Breckinridge (1821-1875), who was also an unsuccessful candidate for President in 1860.  In addition to their political involvement, members of the Breckinridge family have held many important positions, serving as college presidents, theologians, ministers, and high-ranking soldiers.  The collection features portraits of Robert Jefferson Breckinridge (1800-1871), Charles Henry Breckinridge (1844-1867), and Charles’ older brother Joseph Cabell Breckenridge, Sr. (1842-1920) and family, which is the predominate part of the collection.

One of the early founders of the family, John Breckinridge (1760-1806) served as Attorney General of the United States under Thomas Jefferson.  His son, Robert Jefferson Breckinridge (1800-1871) was a politician and Presbyterian minister who opposed slavery, favored public education, and was a passionate supporter of the Union during the Civil War.  Robert Jefferson had several sons, including Joseph Cabell, Sr. (1842-1920) and Charley Henry (1844-1867).  Joseph Cabell, Sr. fought for the Union, subsequently making a career for himself in the Army, along with his brother Robert Jefferson Breckinridge, Jr. (1833-1915) who fought for the Confederacy and later became a prominent politician in Kentucky.

Robert Jefferson Breckinridge (1800-1871) was married three times, first to his cousin, Ann Sophonisba Preston (1803-1844) in 1823, and together, they had eleven children.  After Ann passed away in 1844, Robert went on to marry another cousin, a widow named Virginia Hart Shelby (1809-1859) in 1847, and they produced three children.  In 1868, Robert married his third wife, Margaret Faulkner White.

The collection focuses heavily on General Joseph Cabell Breckinridge, Sr. (1842-1920) and his family.  Joseph Cabell, Sr. is the son of Robert Jefferson Breckinridge (1800-1871) and Ann Sophonisba Preston (1803-1844).  Joseph Cabell, Sr. was educated at Centre College, Kentucky and at the University of Virginia; from there he went on to study law.  On the outbreak of the Civil War, Joseph Cabell, Sr. joined General William Nelson’s army of Kentuckians, soon becoming acting assistant adjutant-general.  At the same time his brother Robert Jefferson Jr. (1833-1915) and their cousin John Cabell (1821-1875) were serving in the Confederate Army.  Like many Kentucky families during this time, the Breckinridge family was divided.  In 1862, Joseph Cabell, Sr. received a commission in the U.S. Army for gallantry at Mill Springs, Kentucky and was assigned to battery B, 2nd artillery.  By July 1864 he was brevetted captain, and major by March 1865.  Joseph Cabell, Sr. married Louise Ludlow Dudley (1849-1911) in 1868; and together they had 13 children (listed oldest to youngest): Mary Dudley (1869-1939); Robert J. (1870-1871); Joseph Cabell, Jr. (1872-1898), [Joseph Cabell, Jr. fought in the Spanish-American War (1898) serving on the USS Cushing (TB-1) and was washed overboard and drowned in Cuban waters; in his honor the USS Breckinridge (DD-148) was named after him.]; Louise Dudley (1873-1874); Ethelbert Dudley (1875-1914); Mabel Warfield (February 1877-March 1877); Lucian Scott (1878-1941); Lucy Hays (1881-1959); Dr. Scott Dudley (1882-1941); Charles Henry Preston (1884-1885); Henry Skillman (1886-1960); Margaret Scott (1889-1970) and John Preston (unknown).

By January 1889 Joseph Cabell Breckinridge, Sr. was promoted to Brigadier General and Inspector General of the Army and was promoted to Major General of volunteers in the Spanish-American War.

Charles Henry Breckinridge (1844-1867), also featured in this collection, was the last child born to Robert Jefferson’s wife Ann Sophonisba before she passed away.  Charles Henry was a cadet at the United States Military Academy at West Point from 1861-1865 and on 23 June 1865 he was commissioned first lieutenant of the 15th Infantry.  He served in Alabama after December 1865 and was commanding the company and post at Fort Morgan when he died of yellow fever August 27, 1867.

Historical Note

William Strudwick “Arra” Arrasmith was born in Hillsboro, North Carolina in 1898 to Thomas and Mary Arrasmith. Arrasmith studied architecture at the University of Illinois and graduated in 1921. After graduation, Arrasmith briefly worked in New York City before moving to Louisville, Kentucky, where he worked with local architect E.T. Hutchings before moving to the renowned architect Brinton B. Davis’ firm. After leaving Davis’ firm, Arrasmith became business partners with Clarence Stinson, and later Hermann Wischmeyer. During the Great Depression, Arrasmith, a member of the Army Reserves, was called to active duty and given command of a Civilian Conservation Corps detachment. In 1936, Fred Hoyt Elswick joined the firm, making it Wischmeyer, Arrasmith, and Elswick. Around 1935, the firm submitted a design proposal for the Louisville terminal to the Southeastern Greyhound Company, for whom Arrasmith had previously done small projects. The firm successful completed the Louisville terminal and won subsequent commissions for terminals in Washington, D.C., Atlanta, Cincinnati, and Chicago. During World War II, Arrasmith was assigned command of construction of Camp Atterbury in Indiana, before serving overseas in Europe. Upon returning to the United States, Arrasmith renewed his work with Greyhound as an in-house architect and moved to Cleveland to be closer to their headquarters. Around 1950, Arrasmith returned to Louisville, but continued to work primarily on Greyhound projects. In 1953, Arrasmith formed Arrasmith & Tyler with Will Tyler. The firm continued to undertake some projects for Greyhound but the relationship diminished with changes in Greyhound’s longtime executive leadership. This partnership dissolved in the early 1960s. Arrasmith worked as a sole practitioner for a few years before forming Arrasmith & Judd with Arnold Judd in 1963. In 1965, Arrasmith died at the age of 67. Arrasmith was married to Elizabeth “Betty” Arrasmith (1901-1999), with whom he had one child, Anne Lewis (née Arrasmith).

All-Prayer Foundlings Home, Lantern Slide Photograph Collection, 1904-1931

Rights: For information regarding literary and copyright interest for these papers, contact the Curator of Special Collections.

Size of Collection:  70 glass lantern slides and 1 illustration in wooden frame for viewing (.5 lin ft.).

Location Number:  012PC33

Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of seventy glass lantern slides of images of foundlings, adult caregivers, biblical scenes, illustrations advocating temperance, passages of scripture, and hymns; and one illustration in wooden frame for viewing. The collection also includes a box of unused slide plates as well as several box tops and bottoms.

Historical Note

The All-Prayer Foundlings Home was established in 1905 by Lutheran Pastor George Clinton Cromer (1869-1950) and his wife Grace Orlena Kelly (abt.1877-1963) to care for orphans under the age of three. They took the name from John Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress, in which the pilgrim relied on prayer to protect him rather than carrying a weapon. Founded on the principle that they would trust God to meet all their needs and take on no debt, other than carefully considered loans for the houses, the Cromers refused to solicit donations and instead followed the pilgrim’s example and asked God to answer their prayers.

The Cromers initially established the nonsectarian institution in their house at 1622 Story Avenue in Louisville, Kentucky. In 1918, they moved the home just over a mile away to 2305 Sycamore Avenue with twelve mothers and twenty-nine children in its care. Mrs. Comer designed a second home they had built next door specifically to meet the needs of the orphans and mothers. According to the Golden Key, a pamphlet written by Mr. Cromer to mark the 25th anniversary of the founding of the home, the Cromers cared for 709 children during that time, with a mortality rate of 11%. The Cromers adopted and raised three of the children who came to their home: William and Louise, who were two weeks old when adopted, and Doris, a one-year-old.

Cromer preached in churches of all denominations in fifteen states about how to live a life of prayer. The Golden Key pamphlet describes him “packing up [his] lantern and curtain and slides” after just such a talk (p.18). In another passage Cromer writes, “we have beautiful stereopticon views which we show and nearly always have some of the children from the Home along to sing and recite on the program,” (p. 34).

In forty-five years of service, the home cared for over a thousand infants and five hundred mothers. In 1947 it became a home for unwed mothers; it closed in 1969. This collection was discovered in materials removed from 2305 Sycamore Avenue, the final location of the All-Prayer Foundlings Home, and donated to the Filson Historical Society.
