Scope and Content Note

The collection contains memorabilia collected from 1969-1975 by Patricia Bellen, a student at Moore High School in Louisville, Kentucky. The collection provides a look into student life from the late 1960s to the mid-1970s at Moore High School, while handwritten messages and “slang books” show the nature of adolescent friendships among students.

Moore High opened in January of 1969. Bellen appears to have been a sixth grader at the school in 1969, and graduated in March 1975. The collection consists of various materials related to the school, including issues of the school publication the “Round Up,” in which students wrote on school issues. Some issues contain opinion columns that comment on other current events such as the moratorium to end the Vietnam War in October 1969, and concerns over students smoking.

“Slang books” as they are labeled resemble friendship booklets of stapled paper. These booklets were compiled by Patricia Bellen and consist of personal questions on each page that were given to classmates to respond to. The “Buzzbook” contains the address and contact information of each Moore High School student who attended in the 1973 schoolyear.

Other items include basketball and football game schedules and programs from 1969-1971, an undated theatre program for “Tonight on Broadway,” and programs for a “She Male” contest for the years 1972 and 1973.

The scrapbook commemorates Bellen’s high school graduation in 1975 and includes photographs, commencement programs, handwritten messages, ephemera related to prom and graduation.
