Ackermann family. Papers, 1929-1999. 52 items.

The collection, dating from 1929 to 1999, documents the Ackermanns, a Jewish family who left Austria in 1938 and eventually settled in Louisville. Most of the papers relate to Dr. Kurt Ackermann (1910-1998), his wife Gerda Pokorny Ackermann (1910-2008), and his sister Gertrude "Trude" Breiner (1906-1999). Materials include legal papers from the 1920s-1940s; Trude's 1999 personal account of the family's 1938 emigration from Austria to try to escape anti-Semitic violence and discrimination; newspaper clippings and programs relating primarily to the University of Louisville Symphony Orchestra, in which Kurt played the violin; and letters to Kurt upon his retirement as an ophthalmologist in 1976. Photographs acquired with the Ackermann family papers have been separated and transferred to the Filson's photograph collection (019PC45).
