Biographical Note

1921 in Cleveland, Ohio. He attended Ohio State University, where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Education, and later served in the Army during World War II. Metz worked in broadcasting at WHAS-Radio and WHAS-TV in Louisville, Kentucky, as a talk show host and weathercaster for 19 years. He made his debut on WHAS-Radio in 1946 and helped put WHAS-TV on the air. In the same year, he began recording Talking Books at American Printing House for the Blind. He had a nighttime radio show called Metz Here that ran from 1959-1993. He also hosted Omelet on WHAS-TV with co-host Faith Lyles; Omelet aired from 1971-1976. In 1993, he retired from 840 WHAS-AM but kept doing ads for TV and radio. His personal life was not public, so the depth of his history in his career is all that can be located.

Scope and Content Note

This collection contains documentation regarding Milton Metz’s career in broadcasting at WHAS-Radio and newscasting at WHAS-TV in Louisville, Kentucky. The majority of the materials include miscellaneous newspaper clippings of articles that Metz worked on or “current events” of the time that he was on the air, as well as correspondence between Metz and colleagues and fans regarding his work at WHAS-TV and Radio. Documentation from Metz’s career at WHAS can be found throughout, including catalog cards of those he interviewed, speeches he gave on various platforms, and the history of his WHAS-TV show Omelet.

Folder 1 contains various articles and written speeches from events where Milton Metz spoke or was the Master of Ceremonies. Most of the documents are what was talked about on his shows or his speeches given at events regarding him or other acquaintances in the field.

Folder 2 contains alphabetically organized catalog cards of interviews that were primarily held by Metz with his acquaintances and other professionals from the field. Interviewees include Muhammad Ali, George Kennedy, and Frank Sinatra, Jr.

Folder 3 contains newspaper clippings, memorandum, and correspondence regarding Metz and his features in publications and media.

Folder 4 contains quick-typed explanations of Metz’s WHAS show Omelet accompanied by correspondence regarding the show.

Two VHS tapes document another journalist’s visit to American Printing House for the Blind and editorial cartoonist Hugh Haynie.
