Content

The bulk of the collection consists of letters received by A. Z. Boyer's future wife, M. Peyton Castleman. In addition to letters from her parents, family, and friends, Peyton's papers include courtship letters from A. Z. In a letter from Frankfort dated 9 August 1859, A. Z. writes, "I was very sorry to disappoint you Saturday evening but I could not get off," adding, "the Negroes had every thing in the Horse line engaged for the next day, there was a Big meeting somewhere." He notes, "on such occasions they commence engaging about the middle of the week previous."
