Content

A letter, dated 21 February 1937, written by Walter A. Kendall, a clerk with the Federal Land Bank in Louisville, Kentucky, to Louise, an acquaintance. Kendall, a resident of a lodging house, describes the conditions in the house during the 1937 flood with the lack of gas and electricity for several days. He details the efforts to rescue and preserve files, records and books at the bank with the help of a Black crew and white women. Over the course of several days they were able to collect 70 books, over 500,000 paid checks and thousands of other documents, water soaked and covered with mud.
