In a letter dated 1 March 1863 Richards writes to his sister and speaks of his reluctance to serve with Black soldiers. He's not against arming them but he understands soldiers' unwillingness to fight side by side. In a letter dated 22 March 1863 he writes even more extensively on his feelings about Black people. He also lists reason why arming free or formerly enslaved people isn't expedient.
