Content

The collection includes a series of blueprints that detail the architectural features of outbuildings at the William Shallcross Speed estate, also known as "Kanawha." The estate is located at 516 Altagate Road in the Cherokee Park neighborhood of Louisville, Kentucky. The collection contains original plans for the carriage house, "Stables for Mrs. M. L. Akers," designed by John Bacon Hutchings circa 1911, as well as proposed renovation plans by former owner Bruce Blythe Jr. Also featured are detailed blueprints of the Gardner's Cabin by Charles Platt, which did not survive when the estate was sold in 1968, as well as proposed, but unbuilt, plans for a rose garden by Ellen Shipman. The collection also includes masonry plans for the greenhouse and the cistern rainwater reservoir. Additionally, there are two photos of the carriage house, circa 1990, one in black and white and one in color. The carriage house has been converted into a residence. Still, it has a "unique blend of the Romanesque, Byzantine, Tudor, Colonial Revival, and Arts & Crafts styles," which was the intention behind Hutchings' original design.
