The documents in this collection are the original construction documents for the 1928 rebuild of the Colored Junior High School, which was located at 18th Street and Madison Street. The school had several names over the years: Madison Street School (1868-1911), Western Departmental School (1911-1928), Madison Street Departmental School for Colored Children (1928-1929), Madison Street Junior High School (1929-1961), and Russell Junior High (1961-1975). The building was designed by architect J. Meyrick Colley, who was the school board architect for Louisville at that time.
