Scope and Content Note 

Papers include correspondence, 1886-1936, discussing routine church and personal matters; sermons and addresses; annual reports as pastor of the First Christain; articles; commissions and membership certificates; church bulletins; membership lists; theological notebooks kept while a student at Christian University at Canton, Mo.; and a manuscript biography of Dr. Powell. 

Biographical Note 

Edward Lindsay Powell was born in King William County, Va., 1860. He graduated from Christian University in Canton, Mo., in 1881. Ordained Christian (Disciples) Ministry, 1881. Powell was a pastor in Va. at Charlottesville, Gordonsville, Norfolk and Lynchburg; in Ky. in Maysville, and First Christian Church in Louisville beginning in 1887. In that year, he married Lida Smoot, of Maysville, Ky. Lida died in 1907 and Powell married Dr. Anna M. D. Gordon in 1909. Powell died in 1933.
