Historical Note
Virginia Dale Kyer, daughter of Dotsy Fitzhugh Kyer and Minerva Spencer, was born on 17 February 1924 in Camden-on-Gauley, Webster, West Virginia. Dotsy and Minerva had three other children: Gerald Spencer, Charles Morton, and Lois. After Virginia attended school at Berea College, she moved to Louisville to take care of her ill sister. It was here that she worked as a librarian and teacher. She also met her husband, Thomas Hutsell, in Louisville and they were married on 30 August 1958. Virginia was always interested in her Kyer family history. She researched almost every branch of her tree, especially the Kyer, Spencer, Caldwell, Morton, and Mullens lines. To assist in her research, Virginia kept dutiful notes and copies and was active in several historical societies. She also notably maintained consistent research correspondence with her extended family as well as other researchers. After Virginia died on 21 January 2018 in Louisville, Jefferson, Kentucky, her loving husband, Thomas, donated her family research collection to the Filson Historical Society.
