Scope and Content Note 

Letters written by Col. Hardy to his wife while serving in the Second World War. The early letters are written while he is training with the 38th Artillery at Camp Livingston, La. He then moves to Hawaii before being sent to New Guinea. In Dec. 1944 his division is sent to the Philippines where the unit remains until the war’s end. In his letters he discusses family matters and his Brinly-Hardy business. He describes life in the South Pacific from the inhabitants to the fighting. He also comments on the war in Europe, politics and the army, U.S.O. visits, medical services and military operations. 

Biographical Note 

James Edward Hardy was a Colonel in the United States Army in World War II. He was a veteran of World War I, married with twins, a boy and a girl, and ran Brinly-Hardy Co. win he volunteered for service in 1943. The family business is a manufacturer of agricultural equipment. In the war he trains and serves with the 38th Artillery division and is sent to Louisiana, Hawaii, New Guinea and the Philippines. He returns from the war to the business but dies in 1951.
