Scope and Content Note 

The papers of Jonathan Clark, Josh Hite, Isaac Hite, Major Isaac Hite of Ky., and Abraham Hite.

Jonathan Clark’s papers include correspondence, accounts, bonds, land papers, and legal papers. 

Land papers concern Clark’s lands in Ind., Ky., Ohio, and Va. Included is a deed book, and a notebook concerning improvements made by settlers in the Northern Neck of Va. in 1786. 

Legal records, 1756-1797, of Spotsylvania County, Va.; and legal fee bills. 

Papers of Josh Hite concern his land dealings. Includes papers about his lands in the Northern Neck, 1734-1760; contemporary transcript of the record in the case of Josh Hite et al. v. Thomas Lord Fairfax, et al., 1749-1786, confirming Hite’s title to the land; other records, 1786-1807, relating to land and litigation involving Josh Hite, Robert Green, William Duff, and Robert McKay, including documents drawn by John Marshall; and letter, 1786-1812, to Isaac Hite and Colonel John Green from their attorney, John Taylor of Caroline County, and others. 

Also includes the papers of other Hite family members. The papers, 1773-1795, of Isaac Hite including Va. and Ky. land papers. Papers, 1796-1807, of Major Isaac Hite of Ky.; and the papers, 1807-1812, of Abraham Hite. 

Correspondents include Richard C. Anderson, John Armstrong, George Rogers Clark, John M. Herndon, Abraham Hite, Isaac Hite, James Williams, Leonard Young, and others.

Biographical Note 

The Clark and Hite families were early Kentucky families whose roots were in Virginia. Jonathan Clark was a Revolutionary War soldier and Virginia farmer who later moved to Kentucky. His wife was a member of the Hite family of Frederick County, Va. Josh Hite was a landowner in Virginia’s Northern Neck. Abraham and Isaac Hite were early Ky. settlers.
