Scope and Content Note

The Binghams were one of the most influential Louisville families of the 20th century. The family built fortunes, reputations and, sadly, lost loved ones in the last century, inspiring headlines, gossip, and numerous books, a few written by Bingham descendants. The patriarch, George “Barry” Bingham, Sr. was born to Judge Robert Worth Bingham and Eleanor Miller Bingham in Louisville, Kentucky, on February 10, 1906. Barry’s father was a successful attorney and active in civic affairs and politics. In 1918, Judge Bingham purchased The Courier-Journal and Louisville Times from the Haldeman family. These two major Louisville newspapers established what became the Bingham media legacy. His successor to the media company was his son Barry, Sr.

This extensive photograph collection documents the family and social lives of George “Barry” Bingham, Sr. (1906-1988), his wife Mary Caperton (1904-1995), and their five children: Robert Worth (1932-1966), George “Barry,” Jr. (1933-2006), Sarah known as “Sallie” (1937-), Jonathan Worth (1942-1964), and Eleanor (1946-).

The collection consists of 6 boxes and 3 oversized boxes. The collection has been arranged into 17 series. Series 1-3 focuses on the patriarch of the collection George “Barry” Bingham Sr., and his wife, Mary Caperton. Series 4-8 focuses on their five children: Robert Worth III, George Barry, Jr., Sallie, Jonathan, and Eleanor. Series 9-13 focuses on the patriarch and matriarch’s grandchildren and related families including distant relatives of the Binghams and Capertons: Miller/Millers, Flagler, Hillard, Millers, Callahan, Lefroy and Montague. Series 14-15 focuses on the places traveled in the United States and abroad, the family home, Melcombe Estate in Glenview, Kentucky, and various events the family attended. Series 16 focuses on African Americans the family employed, their close personal family friends, and images of the family pets. Series 17 is family photograph albums.

Also included is a family compiled history book, “The Binghams, The Longs, The Millers, The Montagues, The Lefroys and The Capertons: An Album of Beginning’s” by Eleanor Miller and Barbara Koppelman, 1995.

Biographical Note

The Binghams are one of Louisville’s most influential families. The family built fortunes, reputations and lost loved ones in the 20th century, inspiring headlines, gossip, and numerous books, a few written by Bingham descendants.

The Bingham Family Photographic Collection, ca. 1860 mid 1990s, shares the personal side of the Bingham story, including generational portraits, family vacation snapshots and unique photographic details of one of Louisville’s most storied families.

Robert Worth Bingham (1871-1937), a North Carolina native, married Louisvillian Eleanor Miller in 1896, settling in Louisville to raise three children. Following the deaths of Eleanor, and his second wife, Standard Oil heiress Mary Lily Flagler, Bingham purchased The Courier-Journal and The Louisville Times. He married a third and final time to Louisvillian, Aleen Lithgow Hilliard. Though known throughout his life as Judge Bingham, following a brief stint on Jefferson County Circuit Court, Bingham’s final title was U.S. Ambassador to the Court of St. James, the British ambassadorship.

Judge Bingham’s first son Robert Worth (né Norwood) Bingham (1897-1965) was an alcoholic who lived abroad and in the western U.S. The Judge’s daughter, Henrietta Bingham (1901-1968), pursued an adventurous life, running with the famous Bloomsbury set in England. She later settled back in Kentucky with interests in journalism, independent bookselling and horses. Henrietta had relationships with women, which, at times, caused her to be ostracized.

After Judge’s death in 1937, his second son, George Barry Bingham, Sr. (1906-1988) took over leadership of the newspapers and WHAS radio. Barry Sr., a Harvard graduate, made a lifelong match when he married Radcliffe alumnus, Mary Caperton (1904-1995) of Virginia in 1931. The couple had five children: Robert Worth III, George Barry Jr., Sallie, Jonathan, and Eleanor.

Barry Sr., while maintaining the title of publisher, served as a Naval officer during World War II, and was twice awarded the Bronze Star. In 1949, he headed up implementation of the Marshall Plan in France. From 1949 to 1950, Mary Bingham and the five children lived in Paris as Barry Sr. served his country in this important role.

Barry Sr. was a force in journalism, here in the U.S. and abroad. He played a leading role in the promotion and protection of press freedoms, including work as the chairman of the International Press Institute. He served on numerous boards of organizations among them: the Rockefeller Foundation, Berea College and the advisory board of the Pulitzer Prize. In 1986, following family infighting, Barry Bingham Sr. made the decision to sell the Bingham newspaper, printing, radio and television properties, ending nearly seventy years of direct influence in Louisville media.

Along with serving as matriarch to a growing family, Mary C. Bingham was a civic leader and philanthropist. She and her husband traveled all over the world, often taking their children with them. The Bingham family enjoyed vacationing in Chatham, Massachusetts, and the collection contains numerous images of fun at the beach. Mary was longtime editor of the Courier-Journal’s book page and took pride in gardening, which is evidenced in pictures, saved over decades.

After her husband’s death, Mary continued to serve on several boards, traveled with friends and passed along to her grandchildren the family traditions of exploration, charity, and regard for the written word.

Robert Worth Bingham III (1932-1966) was known as Worth and was raised to take over his father’s role in the media empire. A 1954 graduate of Harvard and a Navy veteran, Worth sharpened his journalistic skills at newspapers in Minneapolis and San Francisco. Rejoining the Courier-Journal, he served in the Washington bureau during the Kennedy administration before returning to Louisville as assistant to the publisher. Worth married Joan Stevens in 1960, and they had two children. In July 1966, Worth was killed in a car accident while on vacation with his family.

George Barry Jr. (1933-2006) grew in the shadow of his older brother, while distinguishing himself as thoughtful, persistent and a pioneer in journalistic ethics. Barry Jr. graduated from Harvard where he rowed crew, sparking a lifelong love for the sport. After service in the Marines, he interned at the CBS Network, drawing praise from Edward R. Murrow. Barry Jr. married Edith Stenhouse Francini in 1963, raising a family of two sons and two daughters. After Worth’s death, Barry Jr. became heir apparent in the family media company. He took over management of the properties, which by then included WHAS television, in 1971. During his tenure, the Courier-Journal won three Pulitzer Prizes. After the sale of the media properties, Barry Jr. created a newsletter on newsroom ethics and became known as “a philanthropist who did not spend money on himself.”

Sarah “Sallie” Montague Bingham (1937-) Sallie Bingham was the middle child and first daughter. In her youth, Sallie exhibited a flair for creative endeavors, including photographing her toys and writing plays for performances by her siblings and friends. She graduated from Radcliffe and was a published author before she turned 25. Since then, she’s produced a variety of works including a 2022 memoir Little Brother about Jonathan Bingham. Sallie founded the Kentucky Foundation for Women which grants to Kentucky writers and artists. She has been married three times and has three sons.

Jonathan Worth Bingham (1942-1964) Jonathan Bingham’s too short life is documented in this collection. A curly-headed blond, Jonathan appears in photos, curious about the outdoors, interested in others and how things are made, and loyal to his membership in the Boy Scouts of America. Jonathan attended Harvard. He was home on a break when he scrambled up an electric pole hoping to provide light to a barn on the family property. He touched a live wire and was killed instantly. His last photos show the shadow of the man he was becoming and the promise that went unfulfilled.

Eleanor Bingham Miller (1946-) Eleanor is the youngest of the Bingham children. More than her siblings, she was raised in the television age, and it formed part of her life’s work. Eleanor went to college in North Carolina and England; she worked in television and film in Los Angeles and New York. Her later life has included a dedication to land conservation, particularly here in Kentucky. In 1979, Eleanor married Rowland Miller, shifting from her maiden name, Eleanor Miller Bingham (in honor of her grandmother) to her married name. Eleanor Bingham Miller. The couple have two children.

In many ways, the family estate, Melcombe, is itself a character in this collection. Purchased by Judge Bingham in 1918, Melcombe was named for a Bingham ancestral home in England. The property contains a number of structures including the “Big House,” “Little House,” amphitheater and pool. It is located in Glenview along the Ohio River. This collection contains numerous images of the property taken over generations of Binghams.

Box 6
Miller-Callahan photograph album (021PC5.1953)

A photograph album containing seven 12” x 10” pages, presumedly owned by Miller Callahan. Miller is, likely, one of three sons of Americus Franklin Callahan (1889-1954) and his wife, Katherine Miller Callahan (1862-1946). Katherine is the sister of Eleanor Miller Bingham (1871-1913). The Callahans’ three sons were Franklin Miller Callahan (1889-1954); Samuel Miller Callahan (1892-1975) and Laurence Kingsley Callahan (1897-1977).

The album covers life in the early 20th century, mostly during the 1910s. Images include downtown Louisville, the Louisville Water Tower on River Road, and in the country. Subjects include early motorcars, horses on a racetrack, and Louisville’s interurban railroad. The people include the Callahan boys and possibly Henrietta Bingham and her mother, Eleanor Miller Bingham on page 10, top row. Page 6 features some early camera hijinks among what are assumed to be friends of Miller Callahan. Numerous pets are highlighted throughout the photo album.
