Scope and Content Note 

Includes correspondence, 1836-1886, regarding his academic career at Bristol College in Pa. and at the Theological Seminary in Lexington, Ky.; his service as rector of Christ Church in 

Lexington, St. George’s and St. Peter’s churches in St. Louis, Mo.; Subjects include his family; the Diocese of Kentucky; Shelby College in Shelbyville, Ky.; and Henry Clay. Also includes statements of account, deeds, articles, and printed programs of Berkley’s readings. Correspondents include Bishop Benjamin Bosworth Smith, Reverend James Craik and other Episcopal clergymen. 

Biographical Note 

1813 Born in Washington, D.C. 

1833-1834 Student at Bristol College, Bristol, Pa. 

1834 Employed in the Episcopal Recorder office, Philadelphia. 

1836 Student at Theological Seminary, Lexington, Ky. 

1838 Ordained as a deacon. 

1839 Became rector of Christ Church, Lexington, Ky. 

1839 Married Sarah Ann Maury. 

1839 Elected a delegate to the General Convention of the Protestant Episcopal Church. 

1841 Visited Boston, Mass. and attended the Triennial Convention of the Protestant Episcopal Church in New York. 

1844 Secretary of the Kentucky Diocesan Convention. 

1844 Trustee of Shelby College. 

1845 Became a member of the American Bible Society. 

1847 Baptized Henry Clay. 

1857-1871 Rector of St. George’s Church in St. Louis, Mo. 

1872 Tried and acquitted by an Ecclesiastical Court. 

1872-1883 Rector of St. Peter’s Parish, St. Louis, Mo. 

1893 Died in St. Louis.
