ago? How were they celebrated? Christmas Card Collection In December of 1988, Mrs. B. Irby Moore of Louisville gave to The Filson Historical a small white box containing
twenty-seven pencil and ink hand drawn Christmas cards created by W. Harold Frantz. After I had examined the contents of this box, I realized that these were no ordinary
cards but full of unusual artistic talent and nostalgic sentiments on behalf of the artist. Colonel William Stewart Hawkins, CSA: Prisoner and Poet of Camp Chase, Ohio“Pardon me if the expressions of my gratitude for your sisterly kindness and sympathy have
been too warm. . .” — Colonel William S. Hawkins, 11th Tenn. Cavalry Fayette Van Alstine Letters, 1861-1879Fayette Van Alstine was born in New York ca. 1833 and worked as an L&N Railroad freight agent in Louisville during the 1860s and 1870s. A collection of his Civil War-era letters is housed in The Filson’s Special Collections and provides a valuable glimpse into Louisville’s wartime history. Filson Fellowship: Rob Harper and Andrew H.
