Century Initiative
The mission of The Filson Historical Society is to collect, preserve and tell the significant stories of Kentucky
and Ohio Valley history and culture. The Filson is often distinguished by our frontier, pioneer and
Civil War collections of Kentucky and Ohio Valley history. However, many individuals may not recognize
that over half of The Filson’s manuscript collection consists of material from the 20th
century.

Bullitt Family Papers
“Hear ye, hear ye, this collection shall come to order.” It would be nice if a magic word suddenly processed
manuscript collections, making them immediately useable for researchers. It might be surprising for some
to know that processing a collection can be a lengthy, time-consuming task, depending upon the size of
the collection.

Aaron Corwin
Portraits
The recent gift of Betty Bone Schiess of two portraits by Aaron Houghton Corwine (1802-1830) to The
Filson Historical Society adds a note of distinction to the society’s permanent portrait collection. Works by
Corwine are highly prized and quite rare due to his death at an early age and limited output. The subjects,
Lewis and Dorothy Waltz, were members of the southern Ohio German community where Lewis worked
as a jeweler and clock-maker.

Filson Fellowships: Aaron Astor
and Anne Marshall
The Filson Historical Society’s unique Civil War manuscripts collection attracts scholars from around the
globe anxious to mine through these valuable holdings. Filson Fellows Aaron Astor and Anne Marshall
visited The Filson during the past year to use these collections in researching their dissertation projects
pertaining to the transformation of black and white politics in Union border states during the Reconstruction
era and also post-Civil War historical memory in Kentucky, respectively.
