The Filson NewsmagazineVolume 3, Number 2The Corlis Family Papers: One of The Filson's Premier Manuscript CollectionsOne of the premier manuscript collections at The Filson is the Corlis Family Papers. This collection came to us in segments from different branches of the family, and their reunion has been not only gratifying but also important. The Ferguson Mansion: Home to The Filson since 1986 The Ferguson Mansion, a Louisville
architectural gem and home to The Filson Historical Society
since 1986, functions not only as an office space but also
as a part of the wealth of out research collections.
Nineteen Filson staff members report for work in what was
once a fabulous home for a family of three. The
Ferguson Mansion, built at the turn of the twentieth
century, is now an adaptive reuse of space dedicated to
preserving the past. Civil War Sheet Music: The Filson's Collection Provides Insight into the National Consciousness of the War The Filson library recently added two
separate sets of Civil War sheet music - one Union and one
Confederate - to its already substantial collection of over
thirty-five hundred titles. At first glance one is
struck by the color and pageantry displayed on many of the
covers. Themes center on the flag, the homeland, and
the heroes, mostly generals commanding large
armies. Breaux Visiting Fellowships: Dr. Craig Friend returns to The FilsonOf all the territories of the
trans-Appalachian west, there was none that inspired the
American imagination more than Kentucky. A lot of that
inspiration arose from Kentucky's situation at the
confluence of two historical themes that would dominate the
nineteenth century - the new West and old South. The
new West was defined by an unregulated and unquenchable
quest for land that drove white Americans into all reaches
of trans-Appalachia. Filson Fellowships - Robert Owens, Kristopher Ray, and Jennifer Cole |
