A collection of nine letters written by Jessie May Walters Steinhaus (1882-1971), a former telephone operator, during the 1937 flood. At the time of the flood, Jessie and her husband George P. Steinhaus (1875-1941), Kentucky State Cashier at the Southern Bell Telephone and Telegraph Company, lived at 3204 West Broadway with daughters Mary and Dorothy, as well as Jessie's mother Mary A. Walters. Most of Jessie's flood letters are written from Bedford, Ind., where she, and likely her mother, ended up with several other refugees after getting on the wrong train. Two letters written after her return to Louisville detail the aftermath of the flood, specifically destruction and cleanup efforts in the West End and the Highlands neighborhood. The collection also includes photos and newspaper clippings about George's career at Southern Bell.
