Community Outreach
The Filson Historical Society continues in its mission to collect, preserve and tell the significant stories of Kentucky and the Ohio Valley history and culture by working with the area’s institutions of higher learning.
Two programs at The Filson, funded by the C. E. and S. Foundation, are available for teachers and their students. The Filson Undergraduate Research Program purpose is to enhance college classroom teaching and learning by using The Filson’s research collections as a resource and springboard for the discussion, study and reflection upon course-related topics in the arts and humanities, especially history. The Teachers as Scholars program seeks to “teach the teachers” of public and private schools at the secondary and high school levels the value of including primary-source material in their classroom use. The programs’ goals are to include the enhancement of the classroom teaching of history, creating a community of support for high school teachers of history, stimulating cross-disciplinary perspectives, encouraging and sustaining teacher scholarship, and nourishing teacher and student interest in and love of history. These programs offer opportunities for engagement, learning, and research in our collections from the undergraduate to postdoctoral levels.
Recently, classes from the University of Louisville and Indiana University Southeast visited The Filson in order to conduct research for their projects. Professor James Beeby from Indiana University Southeast brought his class to conduct research on the 1937 Flood. Professor Bruce Adams’ Research and Methodology class from the University of Louisville conducted their research on WWI and WWII.
The purpose of these programs is to educate students about history and to allow the past to become an opportunity to learn about the present by the use of primary resources. |
