The Filson NewsmagazineVolume 2, Number 1Paul Gunter - Louisville PhotographerThe Filson Historical Societys Special Collections Department recently acquired an important addition to its photograph and print collection. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Gunter donated a photograph collection containing the work of Mr. Gunters grandfather, photographer Paul Gunter, who was active in Louisville, Kentucky, in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Saving the PastIn 1998, a member of The Filson called to tell us that a historic house near
Shepherdsville was going to be demolished to make way for development. The owners generously offered
The Filson anything we wanted in the attic. What we found was a record of almost two hundred years of
family life in rural Kentucky. Rare BooksIn our
library, questions concerning the value of rare books and
memorabilia rank second in number only to inquiries
concerning genealogical matters. While no one on the library
staff is qualified to assess the value of rare books, we can
give you an idea of what parts of our collection are rare
and how we go about adding to these subject areas. The Search Continues - New AcquisitionsThe Filson Historical Society continues to actively add to our genealogical collections to meet the demand of our many research patrons. The interest in discovering where our ancestors came from seems to be a continuous undertaking. Hands-on primary resources, instead of online searching, still seem to be the desired tools for gathering information. |
