The Filson Historical Society’s Campus Expansion Project is well underway. Our contractors, Wehr Realm, wasted no time after the official groundbreaking ceremony on May 8th. They prepped the site, poured test pilings, excavated the new building’s footprint, and have begun to pour the foundation!
To prep the site, the contractors had to make some changes to the parking lot on the corner of 4th and Ormsby which will be the future home of The Filson’s new building: The Owsley Brown II History Center. The fence around the lot had to be expanded and reinforced, and a row of parking lot lights had to be removed.
Once that was accomplished, the contractors drilled test pilings for the foundations. All the test pilings were successful, and after they were left to cure for a few days, the rest of the building’s footprint was excavated and prepped for the rest of the concrete foundational pilings.
Today, the contractors are filling in the last of the concrete pilings. The foundation of the new building includes over 100 foundational pilings. This new expansion will not be going anywhere! They are constructing a permanent home for the future of our history.
This amazing progress is due to the generosity of our Cornerstone Campaign Donors. Thanks to them, we have raised $10.2 million. We need another $1.55 million to reach our $11.75 million goal. Please consider donating to the Campaign in order for us to reach our goal and finish our Project. You can donate online here or by calling The Filson at 502-635-5083.
This is our history. Let's work together to build its future home.
