Castleman Portraits

Adopt an Artifact – Portraits of Johannes Ludwig “Lewis” Castleman, Sr. and Jemima Pearsall Castleman

Portraits of Johannes Ludwig “Lewis” Castleman, Sr. (1744-1826) and Jemima Pearsall Castleman (1750-1844)

Total Conservation Cost: $7,700

These portraits underwent a thorough and careful cleaning of the reverse-side of the canvases. The portraits were re-lined and mounted on a new linen canvas. The painting surfaces were cleaned with a mild detergent to remove accumulated grime and particulates. The old, yellowed varnish and overpaint was removed. The portraits were sealed with a barrier coat of varnish and in painted to fill any voids. They were re-coated with a final non-yellowing varnish. The frames were cleaned, the losses were filled and sculpted, and then retouched to match the original finish.
